steve gollnick's sordid little past

Since 1999, Steve Gollnick has been a heavy presence on the music scene of Ithaca, NY. As frontman of Hubcap, Steve's music has grown from the alt-country beginnings of "Halogen Sons", the band's 2002 debut to the insistent hooks and driving sound of "Between the Rails", named 2004's Album of the Year by the Ithaca Journal. Along the way, Hubcap was named Best Live Band from the Ithaca Times, with Steve garnering honors as Best Male Vocalist from the Ithaca Journal. Influenced as much by the punk aesthetic of X as the folk leanings of Townes van Zandt, as heavily by the pop stylings of the Zombies as the songcraft of Neil Young, Steve and the band have risen to star status in a vibrant regional music scene.

Gollnick has performed with Richard Buckner, Josh Ritter, the Tarbox Ramblers, the Natural History, Saturday Looks Good to Me, Boy Least Likely To and many others, along with contributing vocal work to the most recent release by former Madder Rose singer Mary Lorson and her band Saint Low.

"Chapter and Verse", his first solo release on No Radio Records, collects the most powerful tracks Steve has put to record; certainly the most immediate, accessible and personal. Recorded in basements and bedrooms, barns and porches, the songs carry an intimacy that calls to mind Paul Westerberg, Gram Parsons or Elliott Smith, with the elliptical wordplay of Stephen Malkmus or Neil Finn. But while some tracks tread familiar singer-songwriter territory, the Abbey Road pop experiments of "Little Fake Sneezes" and "Chapterhouse", and album opener "Face Down in the Dressing Room", coming on like My Bloody Valentine drenched in pedal steel, push the album in striking and unexpected directions. With contributions from over a dozen all-stars of the thriving Ithaca music scene, including former Madder Rose members Mary Lorson and Billy Cote, "Chapter and Verse" contains moments with the loose feel of a whiskey-fueled late night pickup session alongside carefully crafted sonic compositions, all driven by the strength of Gollnick's resonant vocals.
